Use Me. But I Still Don’t Want Pants.

This is Deputy Digby Pancake.  You know that Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle and I fight crime every day.   Our arrest books are full.  Our pawcuffs are well oiled and sticky.  Our jobs are full, yet satisfying.  However, before our crime fighting services, I hear that there were others trying to make the world a better place.  Ones with capes.  Ones that flew.

You know, Brickle and I have never been ones for costumes.  Sure, you see many dogs online with cute outfits and well thought out banter with those costumes.  However, the Sheriff and I prefer to do what we do best.  We fight to make the world a better place.  And we don’t need costumes to play that part.  We are ourselves, and that is all we can be.  Truth be told, I also don’t like to wear pants.

But there we were, walking thru the campground yesterday when we saw it.  A thing that we had saw only in movies.  A thing that was from a time, long, long ago.  A thing that defied all odds of even existing in our fast paced world of tiny phones and computers.  A pay phone.  You know, the thing that superheroes changed in to save lives or whatever.

And all of a sudden, I realized why there is so much crime in our world now!  There are no more phone booths anywhere!  Where do the superheroes change into their capes?  This explains it all.  So I thought to myself, what would happen if I picked up the phone on this phone booth? I didn’t have a cape to change into, and I didn’t want to wear pants, as I have already mentioned.  But maybe, just maybe, if I picked up this phone, something amazing would happen. I would learn something.

As I thought about whether I should pick this thing up or not, I heard it calling to me.  “Use me, use me”, it was saying.  It had been years I thought since someone had even looked at this thing.  Yet at one time, people probably stood in line to use it.

Now, whether they stood in line to be a superhero or not, I do not know.  But maybe they wanted to call someone to tell them that they loved them.  Maybe they wanted to call someone to tell them that they were going to be late, or that their trip was going good.  Maybe they had an emergency, or maybe, just maybe, they had to call the police.  But now, no one waits in line. No one picks up the phone.  And I think that is a shame.  Just because we have new ways to call people, new phones to use, we should still remember the things of our past.  We should still give them respect.  Kind of like people, you know?

Just like phone booths, people with a few years on them may feel like they are too old to be used.  But when Girl Person picked up the receiver, she was shocked.  There was still a dial tone! There was still a way to use this phone if she wanted to!  And even though the phone book was hanging and wore out, she didn’t need to look up any numbers.  She just needed to remember the lesson.

If we only had five minutes left, who would we call?  Who would we tell thank you? Who would we tell that we loved them?  And what if you could pick up that receiver and talk to anyone you wanted to for five minutes? Who would it be?

Superheroes may not change in phone booths anymore.  Our world may be full of crime and things that are wrong. Our world wants us to forget the special ones of the past, or those from our past that may still be with us.

But as long as we have a few minutes left, put everything new aside and remember who have always been there.  And tell them that you appreciate them.  It’s as simple as that.  You know the number. But if you call me, I won’t be wearing any pants.
