Time After Time

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  Some days I wake up and know that I am going to be needed more than other days.  As Sheriff, I realize that is part of my job, and I take great pride in doing a good job.  Arrests are needed and absolutely necessary and yep.  Enjoyable.  But some days, I just have to be there.  And although it may not seem like a hard thing to do, it is one of the hardest parts of my job in fact.

If you’re lost you can look–and you will find me
Time after time

This time of year is hard on Girl Person.  December 18th and December 19th are the worst.  You see, our Granny Person left us on the 18th three years ago.  Yes, you may remember her and Cuddles…who is doing fine by the way!  We miss you Cuddles and we will see you soon when we get back to that Florida place.

It seems hard to believe, but Girl Person’s other best friend and ours too, Pappy left us on December 19th…six years ago. Yes, they left us one day apart on the calendar thing.  And so for Girl Person, all of the memories and the reminders that she misses them…although she tries to push it away, come flooding back to her this time of year.  And as Sheriff, I just know that these days are going to be pretty hard.

If you’re lost you can look–and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you–I’ll be waiting
Time after time

Travel may seem hard to some people, but for us, it keeps us busy.  So busy in fact that sometimes we forget things that bother us. But then, if you are anything like the persons, the minute you slow down, you remember.

After my picture fades and darkness has
Turned to gray
Watching through windows–you’re wondering
If I’m OK
Secrets stolen from deep inside
The drum beats out of time–

My job as Sheriff yesterday and today was to remind Girl Person that Pappy and Granny’s lives were not just to be remembered on the two days that they left.  Their lives were what inspired her to be the person that she is.

Their lives…and all of the memories they had together were full of laughter and tears and good things.

And to be sad by looking at dates on a calendar?  It just didn’t make sense, and in fact, as a dog, I am not sure I understand it.

Sometimes you picture me–
I’m walking too far ahead
You’re calling to me, I can’t hear
What you’ve said–
Then you say–go slow–
I fall behind–
The second hand unwinds

There were many more days on the calendar that they were here with us.  And many more good memories than the last.  It is true, time goes on.  But with the passing of time, persons have a chance to learn from the times that they did have together.  For us dogs, we have even less time here than you.  To enjoy every moment is what we do…because we have less of them.  If you lived your life in appreciation, and in the moment like us dogs, how much more joyful could you be?  How much more could you learn…in a short time?

If you feel lost, if you feel overwhelmed because you miss someone so much, don’t forget them, but also don’t forget the ones that are still with you.  Remembering the ones not here by talking about the good times helps us to appreciate more good times with the ones we love that are right in front of us.

You see, if we only dwell on sadness every day…how much MORE time will be lose? There will be one day when the ones sitting right next to us will not be here.  Have no regrets.  There is no time for that.

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick,
And think of you
Caught up in circles confusion–
Is nothing new
Flashback–warm nights–
Almost left behind
Suitcases of memories,
Time after–

We know that to many, our life is only filled with adventure.  But our lives are also filled with the people who made us who we are.  And who YOU are is filled with the people who made a difference to you.  If we remember the times we had…a little every day….when those calendar days come creeping up on you, you will celebrate another year of making them proud for the person you continue to be…in their memory.

Tomorrow is another day!  For us, we will be in this Arizona place until Thursday! So stay with us.  But I made need a break from all of my Sheriff duties! This has been exhausting!

If you’re lost you can look–and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you–I’ll be waiting
Time after time

Beautiful words girl person. Have you ever thought about writing a children’s book about Brickle and Digbys adventures. My 8 and 9 year old granddaughters love books about dogs. Just a thought you are so

I know about “those” dates on a calendar all too well. And your Granny & Pappy are special people – I envied you a little to have such wonderful people in your life. I just think of them (and others) as being on vacation & when we see them again we will all be healthy! Great times to come. ❤

  4. We miss our loved ones when they go to heaven but I know they go to prepare a place for us just how they know we would like it <3 And I know our family will be there to welcome us when our time comes to be with them again. Thank you for sharing your story helping many get through a wonderful yet poignant time of year <3
