No. Leash.

This is Deputy Digby Pancake. You know…it’s not often that I lay down the law. It is often that I lay down. But the past few days have been just, well, frustrating. There is a problem that is on my nerves. And it hasn’t mattered where we have went on this trip. It hasn’t mattered what state we have visited on this trip. It has happened everywhere. And it is time that I, as Deputy address it. I know. I should be sleeping or eating something, and not giving arrest recommendations to the Sheriff. But it is that important.

If you have ever been to a person party, people want to talk. People want to dance and stuff. And it is no different for us dogs. When we see another dog, it’s a pawty all the time!  Most dogs want to say hello and talk and smell and the such, but campgrounds and certain places have rules. They tell us that we have to be on a leash. So yesterday as we were having our morning walk, and making our rounds of peeing on everything, and trying to get in the dumpster because i assumed there was perfectly good pancakes in there, a very nice looking and very big dog ran up behind us licking his lips and ready for an argument. Well, I didn’t have anything to argue about, and the Sheriff was not in the arresting mood yet, so we just didn’t move. That’s when the dog’s person started yelling for him to come back to his campsite. Leash? No. And did the dog listen? After awhile and after Girl Person told him to go back. But what if we HAD been in an argumentitive mood? What would have happened?

Then, on our evening walk, a very mad dog came running at us on the road from another campsite, trying to bite our feet. This very mad dog was mad. And he got even madder as he realized we weren’t going to fight back. It took his persons five long minutes to get him away from us and not even an apology was uttered. Not by the person or the dog. And no. Leash.

Has this happened to us in every state? Pretty much. And we know that tragedy can occur by ignoring the leash law. Dogs can get hurt, people can get hurt, and sadly, some dogs may even be taken away to a shelter jail or worse…killed. And why? Because the persons were either lazy or felt the law didn’t apply to them. And this my friends is not nice. And Deputy Digby Pancake is nothing but nice, and this is even making me cranky. Especially when we heard of our friend’s elderly cat who got killed this week by a dog off leash. And it is simply not fair. When you disobey a law such as this, you not only affect other animals, but the people and families who loved them. And although our blog is mostly happy, this is something we felt we needed to address.  And I am proud to do it as Deputy.  In between meals.

No, leashes are not the funnest thing. But there are places we can go off leash, like the dog park or certain other places. Don’t be lazy. Find out where you can go. Accidents can happen, but the next time you are away from home, try to remember that every dog is different. Some do not want to say hello. Some are jealous of the Sheriff’s handsome which gets them in a bad mood. And some days, I have a lot of stuff to do and do not want to say hello for fear of missing pancake o’clock. When everyone is on a leash, the persons can ask if we can say hello. And that is the nice thing to do. The nice thing to do is what you should always do.

Ok! So! Enough of bizzznessss. Today we are in Manchester Beach, California and will be here until Thursday when we head to Ft. Bragg. Then after that? Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates, and if you haven’t heard, we have a new group on Facebook too! You can talk to other fans, share pictures of your furkids and me and Sheriff may reply to you personally! The Sheriff handles all the requests, and he has to approve you. Click here to join.

Are we getting excited about nearing Sonoma which we have missed for over five years? Excited and nervous, like when you know pancakes should be for breakfast, but you aren’t sure if they really are…

And if you are a new fan, you may not know that when we left Sonoma in 2012, it was a very sad time..but also happy because we got to go back to that Florida place and spend some extra time with family and Granny Person. Then, when we were about to leave Florida again for our Adventure Of A Lifetime, it was time for reflecting.  You can read our two reflection posts here.

Ok! Time to enjoy this California place! Who is with us today? Leash? Good.  We are here Manchester Beach until Thursday. Let’s do this!

You are so right, we had a neighbor that thought that way back in the Oregon place, his fur kid would break out of the back yard and run lose and attack other fur kids in the neighborhood and they didn’t have a chance of getting away from him he was as big as you and the sheriff. And his person just acted like LuLu asked him to tair her side wide open. Any Lulus person called the police about the bad dog but they said there wasn’t any thing they could do about it. Months later another bad dog moved to the neighborhood and went into the other bad dogs yard and attacked him. I think it was karma.what do you think?

Well Done, Digby. Now go enjoy yourself, like a good boy!!! Love you all!!! I cannot believe how rude people can be!!! I’m so sorry you’ve encountered so much of it. Boy Person and Girl Person are much kinder than I would be!!! xoxoxoxoxoxo <3 <3 <3 <3

You are so right deputy! My two are completely different when they walk on a leash. Isabella is not in a friendly mood until after she realizes that Ike is getting attention that she should be getting. Ike loves anybody and everybody and thinks that all dogs are his friends, even when they are not. If they weren’t on a leash, Isabella would run off to find some adventures on her own and Ike would pester every dog and person in Florida (or possibly swim to Cuba to pester them there). It’s nice being a person on the end of the leash too. I get to enjoy what my dogs are enjoying, see things from their point of view (including some things I wouldn’t have noticed without Isabella’s huge ears or Ike’s “super nose.”), and enjoy their company. Off leash, they are on their own to enjoy a romp without me. On the leash – we’re a team!
